How to create a single product with Scalez Barcode Scanner

Watch the video above to see the whole process from start to finish, or follow the written steps below. You'll scan or type a barcode, review the product details Scalez finds, set your price, and create a draft product in your Shopify store.

Before you start

  • Scalez Barcode Scanner is installed on your Shopify store.
  • You have the product's barcode (UPC, EAN, or GTIN), SKU, or model number. No barcode? You can search by product name instead, see step 2.

1. Enter or scan the barcode

Open Scalez Barcode Scanner from the Apps section of your Shopify admin. On the Home page or the Scan barcode page, type or paste a UPC, SKU, or model number into the scan field and click Find product.

You can also use Scan with Mobile/Tablet Camera or Scan with Bluetooth or USB scanner instead of typing. If either gives you trouble, the FAQ covers camera access and hardware scanner setup.

If the code matches a product that's already in your store, Scalez shows This product may already be in your store. You can choose View existing product or Create another anyway. A duplicate warning doesn't use one of your scans.

2. Review the details Scalez found

Scalez pre-fills the product's title, vendor, category, description, and images, so you can check them before anything is created. If it isn't the product you wanted, click Search for another match, or Enter product manually to type the details in yourself.

If Scalez can't find an exact match, you'll see a Find this item section. Enter the item name and vendor (and a SKU or model number if you have one), click Search for matches, then pick the right result and click Use selected product.

3. Apply a product template (optional)

Under Product profile template, pick a saved template (the video uses one called Laptop) and click Apply. A template fills in the fields you haven't completed yet, such as category, collections, tags, target margin, and measurement units. You can create and manage templates from Product templates in the app's menu.

4. Choose your images

Under Images, tick Include on each image you want on the product, or use Upload image to add your own. Uploads can be JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP files up to 20 MB.

5. Set your price

Type your Price. The Market offers section can guide you: it shows the low, average, and high prices other merchants are listing for the same product, with a View link to each listing.

6. Add collections, cost, and target margin

  • Collections: search for a collection, or create a new one right from the search box.
  • Cost and Target margin % (optional): enter what the product costs you and the margin you're aiming for. Scalez shows your gross profit and the price you would need to reach that margin.

7. Check measurements and add tags

Scalez fills in weight and dimensions when it can. Review the values and units before you publish, especially if you use them for shipping rates. Weight saves to Shopify's built-in shipping weight. Length, width, and height have no built-in Shopify field, so they're saved as custom metafields (you can map them to another app's fields in Settings).

Then add any Tags, separated by commas (for example, laptop, back to school).

8. Add variants (optional)

If the product comes in more than one version, turn on Add product variants. Enter an Option name (like Color or Size) and a Value, then optionally add a Barcode and Variant price. Click Add variant to add more. Skip this step if the product has only one version.

9. Create the draft

Click Create draft at the top right. Scalez creates the product in Shopify and shows Draft created, with two buttons: Edit product opens it in Shopify, and Scan another clears the form for your next item.

Every product Scalez creates is a draft, so it won't appear in your store until you publish it.

10. Publish when you're ready

In Shopify, review the product, change Status from Draft to Active, and click Save. The product is now live in your store.
