How to Find and Fix Missing or Duplicate Barcodes in Your Shopify Catalog
The fastest way to find missing or duplicate barcodes in Shopify is to export your full product catalog, including variants, and check the barcode column for blank entries and repeated values. Shopify won't warn you about either problem on its own, which is why they tend to surface first as a rejected marketplace listing or a fulfillment mistake instead of a clean audit.
Why these two problems are easy to miss
Shopify's product admin shows you one product at a time. A missing barcode on a single variant, or a UPC that happens to match another product's, isn't visible unless you're specifically looking at that field on that product. At catalog sizes past a few dozen SKUs, nobody catches this by browsing the admin, it only shows up once something downstream depends on it and fails.
Missing barcodes usually come from products added before barcode tracking was a priority, new variants created without copying over barcode data, or a bulk import that didn't include a barcode column.
Duplicate barcodes usually come from a copy-paste error during manual entry, a supplier catalog merge where two products were assigned the same code, or a template product that got duplicated without updating the barcode field.
How to find them
- Export your catalog from Shopify admin (Products → Export), including variants, so you're checking barcode data at the level it's actually used for fulfillment and sales.
- Check for blanks. Filter or sort the barcode column; any empty cell on a sellable product or variant is a gap.
- Check for duplicates. Sort the barcode column and look for consecutive repeated values, or use a spreadsheet formula (like
COUNTIF) to flag any barcode that appears more than once. - Cross-reference against your source of truth, if you have one, a supplier catalog, a UPC database, or your POS system, to confirm which entries are actually correct.
For a catalog under a hundred SKUs, this is a manageable spreadsheet exercise. Past that, doing it by hand gets slow and error-prone in exactly the way that created the problem in the first place.
How to fix what you find
For missing barcodes: look up the correct UPC, EAN, or GTIN from the manufacturer or a barcode database, and add it to the product or variant. Keep the field formatted as text so leading zeros don't drop.
For duplicates: determine which product actually owns that barcode (usually the original, un-modified listing) and assign the correct, unique code to the other one. Never leave two different products sharing a barcode, even temporarily, since it will cause a scan-to-wrong-item error the moment either one goes through fulfillment.
For a catalog with many gaps at once: re-importing corrected data via CSV is faster than editing products one at a time in the admin. Match on SKU or product handle so the import updates existing products instead of creating duplicates.
Making this a non-issue going forward
The underlying fix isn't a one-time cleanup, it's changing the process so gaps and duplicates stop entering the catalog:
- Require a barcode on every new product and variant before it's published as sellable.
- Run a missing/duplicate check after any bulk import, not just at initial setup.
- Treat a barcode collision the same way you'd treat two products sharing a SKU: as a bug to fix immediately, not a minor inconsistency.
Checking this manually every time a catalog changes doesn't scale for most growing stores. Scalez Barcode Scanner helps with the stop-new-duplicates half of the problem. Whenever you scan or enter a barcode, it checks your store first and warns you that the product may already exist before you create a second listing. It also pulls in matched details from barcode databases, so new products start with a real barcode. It doesn't audit the products you already have, so use the export steps above for that.
FAQ
Will Shopify warn me if two products have the same barcode? No. Shopify allows duplicate barcode values across different products without any warning. The problem only becomes visible when a scanner, 3PL, or marketplace feed tries to use that barcode and can't tell which product it belongs to.
How do I check for duplicate barcodes without exporting to a spreadsheet? For a full audit of your existing catalog, a spreadsheet export is the most direct way to see every duplicate at once. To avoid adding new ones, Scalez Barcode Scanner checks each barcode you scan against your store and warns you before you create a second product with the same code.
Can a missing barcode actually stop me from selling a product? Not on Shopify itself, you can sell a product with no barcode. But it can block or suppress listings on marketplaces that require a valid GTIN, and it will cause scanning errors at any fulfillment point that relies on the barcode to identify the item.
